Names (left to right): Stan Raine and Helen Atkeson of Denver and Steve Brett of Boulder

Where photo taken: Hai Van Pass (highest pass in central Vietnam) between Hue and Hoi An

Best meal: If you are adventurous, try the street food in the Old Quarter of Hanoi, where we each had noodle soup, spring rolls and a beer for about $2. Our "barbecue" dinner at Andy’s Chopsticks in Nha Trang - cooking prawns and beef over a table hibachi - was also memorable. Be sure to try the delicious local red wine from Dalat (Western Highlands), for less than $4 per bottle. Dragonfruit for dessert is a special treat.

Best deal: Silk and other textiles are hard to pass up. Visit the tailor shops in Hoi An, where you can have custom suits, dresses and shirts made in a few hours at a fraction of the U.S. cost. You can also buy several yards of beautiful hand woven silk for under $20 to have something made at home.

Best time to go: January and February. Escape the Colorado winter for the heat (but not unbearable at this time of year) of Saigon and cooler temperatures of the North. The lunar new year (called "Tet") which occurs during this time is celebrated with great fanfare and many colorful traditions.

Best travel tip: If you are planning a bicycle trip, be sure that the itinerary includes your desired balance of time on the bike and cultural excursions, as either can easily fill 100% of your time. Hai Van Pass is as challenging as many Colorado mountain passes, but without the altitude. Vietnam also has world-class beaches, with fine golden sand and the warm water of the South China Sea. Mui Ne was one of our favorites. Throughout the country, the people are remarkably welcoming.
