Best meal: Our buffet spread at the Farm House Lodge just outside Ngorongoro Crater was fabulous! We enjoyed a very tasty pumpkin soup, great breads, spiced-rice, home-grown vegetables and roasted coffee. The African versions of pizza & spaghetti were tasty as were the local beers. The lodge's plantation grounds & lush views were extraordinary.
Best deal: Our guided 15-person, all-US group tour(with Overseas Adventure Travel) included transportation, a fabulous array of lodging, all meals and adventurous game drives. Also, at The Tanzanite Experience in Arusha we learned of the 1060s discovery & mining of tanzanite & were able to purchase certified gems at a very fair price.
Best time to go: The best time to travel in Tanzania is between late June and October, when the rains have finished and the air is coolest. During our visit in September, our guides were keen at spotting exotic African game, birds and reptiles. Much of the up close activity centered around known watering holes as the vast Serengeti Plain was in the midst of a prolonged drought.
Best travel tip: Be sure to visit an authentic Maasai village & a traditional Tanzanian village. What an unforgettable experience it was! Our professional local guides were a bridge to revealing the warmth, hospitality and rich heritage of the African tribal peoples. The cultural immersion truly made this a trip of a lifetime. Also, don't choose the malaria drug Doxycycline because it makes you sun sensitive.
