Where photo taken:Madeline Island, Lake Superior, Apostle Islands, Bayfield, Wisconsin outside Tom’s Burned Down Café. Tom’s is a locals hangout serving typical bar food, if it is open at Tom’s whim. The café has burned down twice and instead of rebuilding he has “pieced it together. Interesting place to visit even if you do not eat or drink, read the signs, graffiti, license plates surrounding Tom‘s.
Best meal: This is a toss up between on the mainland of Bayfield it is of course the Rittenhouse Inn and their special 5 course meal. On the island it is Lotta’s Café. Lotta’s is not named for a person but rather for the fact that it took a lotta work, a lotta time and a lotta money to open it. Both restaurants are not cheap; but the service, views and food at both are worth the expense. Try the Lake Superior white fish.
Best deal:This would be the ferry from Bayfield to Madeline Island. Take it once with your vehicle and from then on go on foot to explore Bayfield and the shops. Cheaper than taking your vehicle back and forth.
Best time to go: For our group of four it was September after the high tourist season and before Bayfield celebrates their apple festival. The quaint village of around 10,000 grows to 50,000 tourists for the festival. The weather was warm enough on several days to wade out into chilly Lake Superior. For families wanting more of a water experience the summer months would be better for swimming.
Best travel tip: No matter when you go book your cottage, condo or hotel room in advance as they are always busy. We rented a lakeside cottage just a few steps from the lake on the northern most tip of the island with marvelous views and lots of forest, very secluded and restful. Our lake frontage was very large with a fire pit and beach chairs to relax on.
