Names (left to right): Alek Komarnitsky from the Republic of Boulder and lots of friendly King Penguins - almost a million of 'em on this beach alone!

Where photo taken: Saint Andrews Bay, South Georgia Island.

Best meal: Meals are all aboard the Ocean Nova ship and my favorite was when we had a BBQ on the deck surrounded by spectacular views of South Georgia.

Best deal: Too many to count since this trip is a total sensory overload - the uncountable number and diversity of wildlife (which will walk right up to you) is amazing. But probably my favorite was waking up an hour before sunrise as we first approached Antarctica and hearing the penguins & birds before seeing them on the passing icebergs as the glow on horizon slowly brightened - an incredibly surreal experience.

Best time to go: I went from Jan 23rd - Feb 10th, 2009 as the seasons are reversed in the Southern Hemisphere so summer is between November and February. Antarctica temperatures was in the mid-30's and South Georgia & Falkland Islands were in the 50-60's - warmer than Denver!

Best travel tip: I traveled with Boulder-based Natural Habitat Adventures (disclosure: My wife works there ... and she watched our kids so I could go) who did a marvelous job. By far the best tip is if you go to see Antarctica, add an extra week and do the "triangle" so you can visit the Falklands and South Georgia - in many respects, these are even more impressive than Antarctica and makes for a trip of the lifetime.

P.S. For those interested, a travel log (with some nifty pictures) of this amazing trip is on my website at www.komar.org

Hands down, the best picture I've ever seen in Paper Trails!

Paper Trails Guidelines

  • Take a Denver Post Travel section with you on your next trip and get someone to take a photo of you (no big groups, please) with the section. Use your imagination, but get serious about sharing your best information with our readers. The more creative the photo and the better the tips, the more likely it will be used in the published newspaper.

Register, log in & upload your photo on this page and remember to include: Who? (identify the people in the photo, from left to right); Where? (where the photo was taken); Best meal; Best deal; Best time to go; Best travel tip.

You are limited to one photo upload per trip. . We prefer HiRes (3 megapixel or larger resolution) JPEG images, and the travel editor will contact you if your image will be used in the published newspaper.
